Otaku Flame

Well, this series is not yet complete, but i wanted to say something about one of my faavourites animes of this spring so there it is:


Genres: comedy, slice of life
Themes: bishoujo, moe, music, school



If i had to tell someone what this series is like, i would first ask them if they have watched Lucky Star. Because this is exactly what this series reminds me of. and thats one of the reason i really like it. Its one of those daily life - well, school life here, but really mainly every daily events or like the above description conveys so well : slice of life- series told in a way that i find entertaining sort of realistic(due to the way a signle event like the pruchase of a guitar is expanded to a full 20 mins eventful quest, lol).

What's more is that all the characters are sympathetic, each one having their own (cute) flaws. All the "horrors" of school life have been eliminated from the story - jealousy, violence etc


Plot Summary: It's Yui Hirasawa's first year in high school, and she's eagerly searching for a club to join. At the same time, Ritsu Tainaka, a drummer, and her friend Mio Akiyama, a bass player, are desperately trying to save the school's light music club, which is about to be disbanded due to lack of members. They manage to recruit Tsumugi Kotobuki to play the keyboard, meaning they only need one more member to get the club running again. Yui joins, thinking it will be an easy experience for her to play the castanets, the only instrument she knows. However, the other members think their new addition is actually a guitar prodigy...


Lets proceed to the presentation of each of the characters:

Yui Hirasawa - Guitar:


Now shes one of the clumsy one,lolz. She doesnt really have any particular goal in life. Shes lazy, likes cakes and daydreamer. The fact that she doesnt know how to play the guitar, made it an excuse for one of the episodes to tell how she bought herself one.

Not surprisingly, she has a younger sister - a year younger - who's the complete opposite, she cooks, and cleans and can be really be mistaken for the older sister.


The light music club is going to give her something to care about.

Ritsu Tainaka - Drums:

Shes like the konata of K-on. Not becoz she spends her life on the computer playing games and being perverted like she was a boy - lol maybe shes perverted in the sense she like to scare the poor Mio to death, illustration:

Rather, shes the one with the strong character. She usually imposes her ideas to the rest of the group. Well maybe shes not a tyrant, but shes the one who wanted to set the light music club with all of her might.

That being said, she also needs to work on the qualities leader should have in order to keep her club together. Im talking about how she manages to get 4 members, but completely forgets to submit the club application to be officially recognized as a club. Or how she forgets to apply for permission to perfom at the school auditorium.


Mio Akiyama- Bass:


My personal favourite. Im guessing im not the only one. She's perhaps the more mature one. or maybe shes just serious about music. (or maybe about anything she decides on doing), sinc she's always the one reminding the other members what the club is really about and bugging them to practice: even suggesting a training camp to prepare for their first show at school.

Someone shy of being the center of attention - she completely loses it when ritsu or yui even imply the possibility of her being up front for anything at all (for their school festival show..or maybe her being dressed up as a maid).Thats the reason why she plays the b*censored**censored**censored**censored* and not the guitar. even if she's really talented when it comes to singing.[yeah due to Yui losing her voice, shes 'forced' to sing for the school event].

The impression i have form the show is that shes the prettiest among the girls, she theyre always making her dress up and moe-ing on her XD. And the way shes really shy about those stuff enhances that impression i have on her.

Tsumugi Kotobuki - Keyboard:
Classy rich girl.

Shes however unusually humble for someone wealthy. She likes to serve tea and cakes during club activities XD so the normal school her is maybe the best way to picture her:


Theres a certain ambiguity about her sexual preferences - weird i should mention that in a supposedly light slice of life genre anime - but she seems to like it when they try to dress up Mio..not like she encourages them, but she just is like hypnotized whenever that happens, illustration:


Sawako sensei:

The club advisor. Likes to dress up the members of the club [funny and weird hobby, lol].

Shes an ex member of the light music club herself. for a reason that is not really told (well theres an explanation that she gives herself, but it sounds ridicuslously unrealistics, haha), she wants to keep that fact hidden. but Mio will find pictures of her back in the days:

In the begining, she gives of the impression of being a shy teacher, but once shes with the club, shes gonna reveal her true self [lulz again here]

Id add that the opening song shows that the anime is a light slice of life one, while the ending may be interpreted as being one of their shows should they become pro musicians
