Basically, a router is to give more then 1 pc a way to be connected together in a lan network, whether to do file transfers, or play games......
A step up is to share internet connections for 1 single internet connection with a few pcs .....

But other things can come into play. A router needs to be able to support many connections ESPECIALLY if your into P2P and torrent. The router needs to also be stable and cool over long periods of time. Another thing is security and stealth you from attack over the internet by hackers.

I am currently using the D-Link Dir-655 router. It works well for me. My personal opinion as to the current best router for home user in 2008 is this the D-Link DGL-4500
