I got the idea to start this thread after watching Welcome to the N.H.K. and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

Definition:
Quote:Hikikomori is a Japanese term to refer to the phenomenon of reclusive individuals who have chosen to withdraw from social life, often seeking extreme degrees of isolation and confinement due to various personal and social factors in their lives. The term hikikomori refers to both the sociological phenomenon in general as well as to individuals belonging to this societal group.

Do you think a hikikomori can be accepted by the society? Discuss.
I've seen Welcome to the NHK (FTW!!!) Great Serie.

Anyhow, I think the hikikomori has a problem, with themself. They shouldn't let the minds of other ppl bother them. They have a problem to adjust, so they should change.
They shouldn't get any money from their parents, like in the serie. Then when he's so hungry, he will have to work.
Should it be a problem? I dont think so

okay.. hikikomori would be like.. the extreme state of isolating self
but does that do anyone any bad?

correct me if i'm wrong
shutting self in a room for a long period would make someone super depress LOL
so i'm wondering how could they stand that?
hrmmm..

putting that aside, and get to your question "Do you think a hikikomori can be accepted by the society?"
would they be a hikikomori if they are being accepted by the society?
it might be that they are "closing" themselves but they become like that due to their experience, isnt it?

so is it wrong to conclude by their own experience on how they want to spend their life?

i dont see why society can't accept them because they dont do any harm to other people

anyway.. as kakkou said.. they should work to feed themselves not by depending to their parents
if.. let say you have a kid that is a hikikomori.. would you ignore him and not giving money? especially when he is like... that?
parents just cant pretend not to see it and it's hard for them to see their kid suffering
right?

They do harm people. There are many cases in Japan involving hikikomori who kidnapped kids, stole money etc.

As for the extreme hikikomori, they will never get out from their house but they tend to injure their families. It's real although they don't show it in anime.

They don't do a lot, I think They would spend their time all day long behind their computer :/
I know, some ppl who play a certain online game a lot! That's one way to get by the day.

Hikikimori that harm people should just get arrested. If they commit a crime, they should be arrested. Like any other person.
But yeah, if that continues, it would be bad. So they try stopping it by going to those people, but I don't think that's very effective. Since they don't stop the problem from getting bigger.

But is society to blame for the hikikomori? Or is it that the hikikomori don't have a "shield", to protect themselves against the world? (I'd blame the parents.)
I wonder, are hikikimori perhaps also autistic and is that the cause of their social withdrawal?
probably.. but anime and stuff plays a part... they're so damn addictive and immersve.. they offer a world so vastly different and without suffering its hard to not get drawn in.. i mean, who amongst us has curled up in our rooms for hours just reading manga and watching anime neglecting meals? its just they havent felt what its like to really live outside with real friends, or dont want to accept the "flaws" in life which make us human..

probably XD
